How can I use skimming to manage my time in the reading test?
Being able to skim is important because it allows you to ignore the irrelevant information. If you don't ignore (or you don't know how to ignore) the irrelevant information, you will waste time reading words and sentences that are not going to help you answer the questions. As a result, you might run out of time.
Skimming is a technique that will help you to manage your time in the reading test. You will find lessons on how to skim in the bonus section of the Reading Academy course. It looks like this:
You should also use the recordings of Live Reading Lessons to see examples of different teachers showing how to skim. You probably have never been taught how to skim, so you need to learn how to move your eyes, what to focus on, and what to ignore.
* Remember, skimming (=understanding the main idea) is impossible if you don't know what the words mean, so you probably need to improve your vocabulary.
** If you can translate a word to your own language but you don't know all of the many different meanings of the word in English, you don't actually know the word. (This is why memorising lists of vocabulary is waste of time.) Improve your vocabulary.
