Do I need to write in pen or pencil in the IELTS test?

IELTS Writing

The latest IELTS guidelines state that you must write your answers in pencil in the Writing paper.

Previously pens were allowed but this has been changed because test papers are scanned, and this works better with pencil.

It also means that you can easily erase and rewrite words.

The test centre will have spare pencils available in case you have forgotten one, but it is better to be prepared and bring a couple of pencils with you.

IELTS Listening and Reading

All of your answers must be written in pencil for the Listening and Reading tests.

It is important that you do not use a pen.

You should still bring a pen with you on the test day because you will have to provide your signature during the registration process, and you can use a pen or pencil for making notes in Part 2 of the Speaking test.
