I have trouble generating ideas for Task 2 Essays. What can I do?

This is a common issue among IELTS students, and many times it's simply because students often think that it's necessary for them to think of unique and special ideas to set them apart from other students.

This is not the case.

The IELTS test is only an evaluation of your ability to communicate in and understand English. This means that it's absolutely fine to use obvious, easy ideas, and in general, these are the best ideas to use because they are far easier to explain and provide specific examples for.

You'll notice that as you read more and more Task 2 topics, they seem to almost steer you towards certain ideas that immediately come to mind. These ideas are fine to use, as it's easy to see that they are relevant and far easier to develop than more complicated ideas.

Remember, the IELTS test is NOT an idea test, but an evaluation of your English abilities, so please don't waste too much time trying to think up incredibly unique ideas, as doing so is a waste of time that could instead be used in the planning, writing, and proofreading of your essay.

If you're still struggling with generating ideas, it would also be a good idea for you to view the various modules of the Critical Thinking Course.
