How can I avoid making mistakes with paraphrasing?

Paraphrasing is one of the most important skills in the IELTS test, and every single part of the IELTS test will test your ability to paraphrase.

The #1 thing you can do to improve your ability to paraphrase is to improve your vocabulary following Chris' strategy in the Vocabulary course.

When you are paraphrasing the question statement in a Task 2 essay, remember the 4 different methods Chris showed you in Module 5 of the Task 2 Writing Academy course (watch from minute 7:30):

  1. use synonyms (but follow the 100% rule)
  2. use a different form of the same word
  3. rearrange the clauses
  4. use examples

Here are some common key mistakes to avoid:

  1. changing the meaning (this usually happens because students use the wrong synonyms)
  2. leaving out some information
  3. adding some extra information

Here are some ways you can practice paraphrasing:

  1. learn how to research vocabulary
  2. Live Cambridge Practice lessons in the VIP Community
