How do I use approximations in Task 1 Academic writing?

This can be tricky, but the first thing to remember is that if you can see exactly what the data is, you don't need to use approximations. In these cases, you should just state the data precisely.

However, when you do have to use approximations, follow this general advice:

  • when the data is BARELY below a certain number, you can state that it's just below, slightly less than, or just under the figure.
  • when the data is BARELY above a certain number, you can state that the data is just above, slightly more than, or just over the figure.
  • When you can't tell whether the figure is above or below a certain amount, you can state that the figure is approximately, around, or about that figure.
